As winter approaches and forecasters are predicting another very cold season, Cheshire East Council is urging residents to take steps to keep warm, well and safe – and to protect themselves by getting their flu jab.
Keeping warm is vital for good health. Living rooms should be heated to around 21°C and bedrooms to 18°C.
If you’re struggling with heating or repairs, contact the council’s Care and Repair team for emergency support.
Cold weather can increase the risk of illness, especially for older people and those with chronic conditions. One of the best ways to protect yourself is by getting your flu vaccination. It’s quick, free for eligible groups, and helps prevent serious illness.
Icy conditions can lead to slips and falls. Wear shoes or boots with flat, low heels and a slip-resistant sole. Take small ‘penguin’ steps, and use handrails where possible. Make sure you have enough food and medicines at home to avoid unnecessary trips out in bad weather.
If you’re concerned about someone sleeping rough, call our Housing Options team on 0300 123 5017 during office hours or 0300 123 5025 out of hours.
Professor Rod Thomson, director of population health at Cheshire East Council, said:
“Winter can be a challenging time, especially for older or vulnerable residents. A simple knock on the door or phone call can make a huge difference. Please check on relatives and neighbours, make sure they have what they need, and encourage them to keep warm.
“Flu cases are also higher than usual for this time of year and having a flu vaccination is still the best protection against flu. Those most at risk from serious illness from flu include children under five years of age, older people, people with long term health conditions, people with reduced immunity, and pregnant women.”
Cheshire East’s Warm Spaces initiative offers welcoming community venues where residents can find comfort, connection, and support. From a warm drink and friendly chat to signposting for key services, these spaces help ensure no one feels cold or isolated. Local organisations and groups are invited to join the network by signing up to the Warm Spaces Charter and making a real difference this season.
