Thousands of people have signed a petition after Dianna Voyatzis launched a campaign for 'Ghost's Law' in memory of her dead cat - named after Jon Snow's pet direwolf from Game of Thrones.
Here's Dianna's story - I bought a kitten from gumtree in April I named her Ghost. I agreed to buy a long-haired kitten. On the day of collection, I received a short haired kitten. I originally did not say anything as I thought shame on you. You made a mistake you gave me such a loving kitten. I instantly fell in love with Ghost. Due to being high risk of the virus and being in everyday I spent all my time loving her.
I was unable to take Ghost to the vets as soon as I would've liked. Due to catching MRSA at the hospital I lost the movement in my arm completely due to this. When I did take her to the vets , the vet came out and said I am really sorry but your kitten is dying. I couldn’t believe this. She had a heart murmur and her stomach was full of fluid. I originally thought I was over feeding her. The vet said to me I think she only has 2 days to live.
I took her to the RVC and to a holistic vets to find out she had heart failure, which was advanced and hereditary. I contacted gumtree and pets4homes where it was confirmed the ‘breeder’ I got her from has sold several sick kittens or people have been to his house and seen sick kittens. I contacted him and told him what happened and he has ignored my messages.. Sadly Ghost died 7th December. At home with me I was heartbroken because on that day I was taking her to have an operation to correct the valve in her heart.
Due to this, I have started a petition that states all kittens must be checked before they are sold. Currently, the law is if you have three or more litters a year you need a licence.
Under licence agreements you need to have your kittens checked. Too many people are slipping through this as they claim they do not have three or more litters and due to this they are selling sick kittens. By changing the law and making it that all kittens are checked before they are sold it will stop people selling sick kittens.
