Officers and staff from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, Cheshire Constabulary and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service came together today, 9 September 2021 to celebrate 999 Day, also known as Emergency Services Day.
Almost two million people work and volunteer in the emergency services today, including 250,000 first responders.
999 Day was founded in 2016 and is a national day across the UK, supported by Her Majesty The Queen, HRH The Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge, the Prime Minister and First Ministers of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
There will be two minutes silence at 9am to remember all those who have been killed during their service to our nation.
John Dwyer, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, said: “This year’s 999 Day is more poignant than ever, especially as all of the service have pulled together to help the country through the unprecedented times as a result of the pandemic.
“Taking the time to reflect and recognise the dedication of everyone that works and volunteers in the sector is important. This day is for you, and I stand and applaud all of your hard work and commitment.”
Chief Constable Mark Roberts said: “We are delighted to be marking the national Emergency Services Day here in Cheshire. We see every day the vital role all our emergency services play, and this has been highlighted even more since the start of the pandemic.
“I would like to thank all of our officers and staff for the fantastic work they do in keeping our communities safe, and I’d also like to extend those thanks to our partners for their efforts in protecting the public of Cheshire.”
Chief Fire Officer Mark Cashin said: “It is great to have a dedicated day during which we can mark the hard work done by our fantastic emergency services. During the past 18-months, the importance of all of our services has been amplified, and we have seen both in Cheshire and across the country the vital role we play in protecting communities.
“Our firefighters and staff have been fantastic throughout this time, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work.”
