Two Cheshire Fire Cadets were honoured with the opportunity to represent UK Fire Cadets at a prestigious garden party on 14th August, hosted by the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, to mark the commemoration of VJ Day.
Millie Stott from Northwich Fire Cadet Unit and Lewis Williams from the Chester Fire Cadets, accompanied by Cadet Manager Jason McTigue, joined veterans and dignitaries to pay tribute to the British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who served in Asia and the Pacific during the Second World War.
The event honoured those who made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of peace.
As part of the commemoration, Millie and Lewis had the rare and moving opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from veterans who lived through the conflict. Their stories offered powerful insights into the realities of war and the importance of remembrance.
Cadet Manager Jason McTigue said:
“We were honoured to be chosen to represent the UK Fire Cadet programme by the National Fire Chiefs Council at this event, which not only recognised the bravery and sacrifice of past generations, but also enabled us to reflect upon the consequences of war and the sacrifices our ancestors made for peace.
“It was wonderful to hear the veterans’ stories first-hand and the experience was something for us all to treasure. Both Millie and Lewis wore our Cheshire Fire Cadet uniform with pride and showed the utmost respect, so I am extremely proud of them.”
Cheshire Fire Cadets were selected to attend the event by the National Fire Chiefs Council, following an application process involving fire and rescue cadet schemes from across the country.
As part of the VJ Day remembrance staff from across Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service joined the nation at 12:00 in a two-minute silence, to honour all who served and those who never returned.
