Council confirms Winsford Remembrance Sunday event

Cheshire West and Chester Council has confirmed that events will continue to take place in Winsford town centre this year whilst construction work continues, including the annual Remembrance Sunday event.

Plans are in place to ensure that the event takes place, and the Council has held discussions with Winsford Town Council and the Royal British Legion on working with them to facilitate the event.

Work is currently taking place on the Council-led £22 million regeneration of Winsford town centre. The redevelopment involves the demolition of some existing buildings and the construction of new and improved spaces for businesses, with a new 168-space car park alongside improvement to walking, cycling access and dedicated cycle storage. New open public spaces are being created for exciting pop-ups, events and visiting attractions, with more green space in the town centre than ever before, creating a relaxing and pleasant environment to enjoy.

The project also includes the refurbishment and relocation of the town centre war memorials in the first half of 2024. The memorials will benefit from improved and increased space around them, and will be installed at surface level to provide better access for all.

The public is being advised that there may be disruption to pedestrian access and routes around the town centre while work is taking place. Signage is being installed to advise of alternative routes. The Council appreciates the patience of visitors to the town centre during this time.

All businesses in the town centre, along with Winsford Library and Vale House Resource Centre, remain open as usual for people to visit.

Cllr Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, said:

“There is lots going on in Winsford, and as development on the town centre continues there is a real sense of excitement and anticipation. The redevelopment will deliver a town centre that Winsford can be proud of, and which vastly improves on what is there today.

“Remembrance Sunday is an important event to the people of Winsford, which is why Cheshire West & Chester Council has maintained safe access to the memorials during construction works despite the additional cost and complexity. The Council is working with partners and plans are in place to ensure Remembrance events can take place this year.

“The refurbishment and relocation of the war memorials means that in future years the people of Winsford will benefit from more open space and improved access to the memorials as they pay their respects to those who made the greatest sacrifice.”

Whilst acknowledging that the works will create some inconvenience, the Council will provide regular updates regarding progress for the duration of the works so that people are aware of what is happening at the various stages of the project.
