At around 4.25pm on Tuesday 26 September, police were called to reports of a collision at the junction of Smithy Lane and the A533, Runcorn Road, in Bartington.
Officers attended the scene and found that the collision involved a pedal cyclist and a white Vauxhall Astra van, which was towing a trailer.
The cyclist, a 75-year-old local man named as Ian Smith from Church Meadows, Little Leigh, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Aintree Hospital via air ambulance.
Sadly, he has since passed away, his family are aware and they are being supported by specialist officers. The family respectfully request privacy at this difficult time.
The driver of the van, a 33-year-old local man, was uninjured.
An investigation into the collision remains ongoing and officers are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any dashcam footage.
Inspector Steve Griffiths, of the Serious and Complex Collision Investigation Unit, said:
“Our thoughts are with the family of the cyclist at this time, and we’re committed to doing all we can to establish what took place.
“The collision occurred on Smithy Road, at the junction of Runcorn Road, and as part of our investigation we’re keen to hear from anyone who was travelling in the area and may have witnessed the incident or seen the cyclist or van driving in the area.
“The same goes for anyone with any dashcam forage which may aid the investigation.”
