New mural unveiled celebrating Winsford Market

A new mural celebrating Winsford and its market was unveiled to the public on Saturday.

The mural provides a bold welcome at the entrance to Winsford Market and celebrates its place at the heart of the town’s past, present and future identity.

The design was created by Cabasa artist, Rhian Kempadoo-Millar, using stories from the market traders, visitors and Pockets Snooker Club. It brings the market to life through depictions of generations of traders, the products sold, architecture and atmosphere, blending in the wider landscape of Winsford, including the River Weaver, Winsford Flashes, marina and surrounding nature.

The design includes products and details associated with the market, including fruit and vegetables, jewellery, vinyl records, threads, deli produce, barbering tools, beauty products, tools and hardware, and more. Children, adults and grandparents appear within the design to reflect the family-run businesses, intergenerational ties and the strong community feeling that is central to the market.

Local people helped Cabasa put the finishing touches to the mural on Saturday as part of a Community Painting Day, with equipment and paints provided by Cabasa. This was just one part of an action-packed day in the town centre, with visitors enjoying a free film festival and the popular monthly Artisan Market.

Cine-Fest transformed the old Greggs unit in Winsford Cross Shopping Centre into a pop-up cinema for the day. The festival showcased the fantastic community-driven filmmaking created through Cine-Window Winsford, shining a light on the contributions of the participants and artists who have been involved over the past two years.

Emily Wood, Artistic Director of Cabasa, said: “We’re delighted with how the Winsford Market mural has turned out. The bold, colourful and welcoming design really reflects the rich fabric of stories, relationships, goods and everyday exchanges inspired by talking to traders. It was great to have the community come along on Saturday to help us put the finishing touches to it, and we hope that the people of Winsford are as proud of it as we are.”

Cllr Lisa Denson, Cabinet Member for A Fairer Future, said:

“Saturday was a fantastic day in Winsford. The mural reflects the vibrancy of the local community, and it was great to see so many people getting involved. Cine-Fest was also a big success, and provided a platform for the wider community to see the talent and creativity of people in Winsford. The Council knows just how vital culture and creativity is to our town centres.”

Plans for a £1 million investment to transform Winsford Market as part of the ongoing regeneration of the town centre were discussed with traders and approved by the Council’s Cabinet in July 2025. The work, which will include refurbishment of the building, a new community space, an improved entrance and a reconfiguration inside the Market, is currently expected to start before the end of the year.

“Winsford has fantastic community spirit, and the mural was the perfect opportunity to show this and how important Winsford Market is to the town. The Council promised to improve visibility of the Market to encourage visitors, and this bold and eye-catching mural at the entrance delivers that.

“Thank you to the traders for helping to design the mural, and for their support with the upcoming regeneration of Winsford Market. The Council has already delivered the biggest investment in the town centre since the 1960s with the first phase of works, and the Market is the next step in the Council’s ambitious regeneration of the town centre. We will continue to work alongside traders as we transform the Market and secure its future.”
