Man sentenced following serious collision in Nantwich

A man who left a pedestrian with serious injuries following a collision in Nantwich has been sentenced.

Jacob Scragg appeared a Chester Crown Court on Tuesday 20th October where he was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work. He was also banned from driving for two years.

The 21-year-old of Wall Lane in Nantwich, had earlier pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving without insurance, otherwise than in accordance with a licence and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

The court heard how at around 5.40pm on Thursday 4th September 2025 Scragg was riding a Talaria Sting electric motorcycle along Waterlode in Nantwich, passing stationery traffic, when he rode through a pedestrian crossing, which was displaying red, and collided with a 59-year-old man who was crossing the road, leaving him with serious injuries.

Following the collision Scragg initially attempted to flee the scene on foot, before being apprehended by a member of the public who took him back to the scene where he was arrested.

The pedestrian was assessed at the scene by paramedics before being transported to hospital where he was treated for almost two months, undergoing several surgeries. He continues to recover at home supported by his family.

During the sentencing hearing His Honour Judge Everett described the victim personal statement provided as dignified and understated, at the conclusion of his sentencing remarks he said that he hopes the case is reported on so that young men understand what can happen, not just the punishment but the impact of such cases.

Detective Constable Faye Clarke of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, added:

“His Honour Judge Everett commented during sentencing that Jacob Scragg should never have been given the electric motorcycle and I hope anyone who may have thought about purchasing one as we head towards the festive period realise that electric motorcycles such as this, are not legal for use on the road.

"Those receiving one should also understand why there are rules to be followed; to keep everyone safe.  Driving is a privilege and not a right, actions such as this have serious consequences on all involved.

“Whilst I understand that Jacob Scragg did not set out to cause the victim harm that day, he made a choice to ride illegally; not only did he drive past stationery traffic and straight through a pedestrian crossing which was on red, but he then fled the scene, pursued by witnesses.

“His actions left the victim with serious injuries which will impact him for the rest of his life and I hope that the sentence handed to Scragg will allow him to move forwards and focus on his recovery.

"I would like to pass on my thanks to those who stopped to assist at the scene and supported the investigation without hesitation”
