The construction phase for Cheshire West and Chester Council’s ambitious plans for the redevelopment of Winsford town centre will begin shortly, following approval of additional Council funding.
Further funding of £500,000 has been allocated to the project, ensuring that the project can be delivered despite increasingly challenging market conditions which are affecting projects across the country.
The Council-led redevelopment scheme will provide new space for anchor tenants in Winsford town centre and create new public spaces for exciting events and visiting attractions. There is also a continued commitment to the town’s cultural programme, building on the success of Winsford Creates and Cine-window.
With the additional funding now agreed, and site preparation works already underway, the Council is preparing to sign contracts with its preferred contractor Kier, so work can start on site in the coming weeks. The works will be complete in late 2024.
The project represents investment of £22.18 million on top of the £21m the Council invested in acquiring the centre in 2018. This investment is partly funded from a £9.98 million grant from the Future High Street Fund allocated for the project.
B&M and Costa have already signed leases to occupy the new units being created as part of the new development, and ongoing leases with many of the existing tenants have been secured.
Cllr Richard Beacham, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Growth, Economy and Regeneration, said:
“We’re delighted that the Council’s bold plans for the regeneration of Winsford town centre are about to become a reality. I know this is a really important project for people in the town, who are excited to see it get underway.
“This redevelopment will unlock the economic potential of Winsford town centre, providing opportunities for new and existing businesses and creating new spaces for events and visiting attractions that will bring footfall into the town.”
