A 43-year-old man who burgled the staffroom at Macclesfield railway station and stole a passenger's belongings, in two separate incidents within 24 hours, has been jailed following a British Transport Police investigation.
Scott Connolly, of Wilkinson Road, Stockport, was jailed for 25 weeks by Manchester and Salford magistrates on Friday 19 May after he pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.
The court heard how, on Friday 30 December 2022, Connolly stole a suitcase from a train which contained items to the value of more than £1,000, including a Burberry scarf.
The case was later found abandoned with most of the contents missing, including the Burberry scarf.
The following day, Connolly returned to the station, this time dressed up for the occasion wearing a Burberry scarf, before illegally entering the station staffroom.
He emerged from the staffroom shortly afterwards with a rucksack and TK Maxx carrier bag, both belonging to staff members.
The rucksack contained a cash card which was used twice by Connolly following the theft.
Investigating officer PC Molly Brunton-Cole said:
"The very fact that Connolly had the audacity to return to the scene of the crime with the sole intent of committing more crime while wearing one of the items he had stolen the previous day is an indication of his character.
"It is hoped that his time in jail will be spent wisely and he will feel some remorse for stealing the hard earned property of others."
