A new initiative across Cheshire East is seeking kind and compassionate people to join the Home from Hospital Good Neighbour programme.
Led by Cheshire East Council in collaboration with the Community for Voluntary Service Cheshire East, the scheme aims to provide practical support and friendly companionship to those recovering at home after a hospital stay.
This programme builds upon the council's successful 'People Helping People' service, focusing on individuals discharged from Macclesfield and Crewe hospitals by offering a helping hand and a listening ear.
Home from Hospital Good Neighbours will receive comprehensive training and ongoing assistance to ensure they feel confident in their role. Volunteers will assist with tasks such as grocery shopping, pet care, preparing meals, or simply checking in for a friendly chat.
The Home from Hospital scheme recognises the power of connection and importance of social interaction during recovery. Volunteers can offer companionship, share a cup of coffee, or even accompany individuals to social activities for a limited time.
Councillor Jill Rhodes, Cheshire East Council adults and health committee chair, said:
"Going home after a hospital stay can be daunting, especially for those who live alone or have limited mobility.
“Home from Hospital Good Neighbour volunteers provide much-needed practical and emotional support, which can help to reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, and improve recovery times.
“Volunteering is also a fantastic way to give back to your community and make a real difference in people's lives. Helping someone regain their independence after a hospital stay can be a very rewarding experience.”
If you're 18 or older, have a couple of hours per week, and are interested in making a positive difference, we encourage you to get involved and become a home from hospital good neighbour.
