Whirlpool is recalling certain models of washing machines sold since 2014.
The National Fire Chiefs Council is working with Whirlpool to ensure as many people as possible are aware of a potential fire risk with some Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines.
Whirlpool is recalling certain models of washing machines sold since 2014.
The machines are being recalled owing to a fault with the door lock, which poses a fire risk. Owners of washing machines from Hotpoint or Indesit machines are urged to contact Whirlpool to check if their machine is affected.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Prevention Manager Steve McCormick said: “ We are strongly advising that owners of these appliances follow the advice issued by Whirpool, which is to unplug any recalled washing machine and not use it, until the appliance has been checked by Whirlpool and deemed safe.
“Even if you have not owned your machine from new you must check it does not pose a fire risk. Second hand machines will be repaired or replaced by Whirlpool if you contact them.”
Customers can call Whirlpool on 0800 316 1442 or use their online model checker tool - Washing Machine Recall (opens in new window)
You will need the model and the serial number of your machine. They can be found either in the recess of the door or on the back of washing machine.
If you have an affected model contact Whirlpool on their freephone number to register the product, this can be done 7 days a week.
Steve added: “Washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers should never be used when the occupant(s) are asleep or when no one is home. Even if you don’t have a recalled model then please also consider this advice along with ensuring smoke alarms are fitted on all floors of your home, as these detect fire in its early stages.”
