Congleton Town Council introduces new Inclusivity Measures for Festive Fun

Congleton is set to shine brighter than ever at this year’s Christmas Switch-On, not just with its twinkling lights but with a heartwarming commitment to inclusivity.

The town council, in collaboration with its Equal Access Support Group and feedback from last year’s events, has launched a series of accessibility improvements to ensure everyone can join in the festive cheer.

The centrepiece of these measures is the brand-new Inclusivity Area, generously supported by a £750 donation from Congleton Rotary. Situated on Mill Street, this dedicated space offers families, prams, mobility scooters, and wheelchair users a comfortable area to experience the festivities. A large screen will live-stream entertainment from the main stage, bringing the vibrant performances to all, away from the hustle and bustle. For those seeking a quieter retreat, a calming space within TMC will be available from 5pm-7pm.

The festivities kick off at 4pm, with the big switch-on at 6pm, featuring lively entertainment, festive stalls, and activities for all ages. Single-sided stalls will line the pedestrian area, creating a more spacious and accessible environment. The community stage has also been relocated to Swan Bank, easing congestion near the Elizabeth statue and enhancing the experience for everyone.

Congleton’s Town Mayor, Cllr Kay Wesley, expressed pride in the town’s strides toward inclusivity:

Thanks to the collaboration of local groups and the generosity of Congleton Rotary, this year’s festivities promise to be more accessible and enjoyable for all. Join us for the big switch-on and soak up the festive atmosphere!”

John Collins Funfairs Ltd has been approved by the town council as its designated light-up toy seller. Two authorised sellers will be conveniently located - one near the John Collins Funfair (by the Town Hall) and the other outside WHSmith. To ensure easy identification, the authorised sellers will be wearing a CTC lanyard. Additionally, all merchandise sold is certified with the BSI Kitemark, ensuring quality and safety. The town council encourages attendees to support the certified sellers for a safe and enjoyable experience.

To help visitors make the most of this magical evening, the town council have produced a free event guide. Copies are available at the Information Centre or can be picked up on the night. The programme includes a handy map and entertainment timetable, so you won’t miss a moment of the festivities.

To ensure the event runs smoothly, road closures will be in place on High Street (12 noon-10pm), and Mill Street and Swan Bank. Motorists will still be able to use Market Street to access Morrisons and the Fairground Car Park. The bus and taxi rank will operate as normal but with all routes exiting via Mountbatten Way. Vehicles on Canal Street will only be able to turn right onto Lawton Street. No access from Moody Steet to High Street. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and, if possible, walk into town. Due to anticipated large crowds, it’s advisable to leave pets at home.
