A Macclesfield Hospital colleague is preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in memory of her late mother and to raise funds for colleague training in the hospital’s Emergency Department.
Donna Rees, 52, who has worked in ED for 25 years, will take on the challenge this month, and says the climb is a tribute to her mum, who she described as her biggest supporter and someone who would have been “incredibly proud” of the effort.
In addition to the personal significance, the climb aims to raise money to improve training resources and development opportunities for her Emergency Department colleagues.
She said:
“As I climb towards the summit of Kilimanjaro, I’ll be thinking of my mum and hoping to make her proud. I’ll be carrying her memory with me every step of the way — especially in the hardest moments.
“Teaching and development are something I’m passionate about, because when we support our staff, our patients benefit too. The ED is more than just a workplace — it’s a place full of strength, compassion and care.”
As a Sister and Training Facilitator, Donna has led the department’s education programme for the past nine years, with funds raised set to be used to purchase simulation equipment and support access to specialist courses that staff may not otherwise be able to attend.
The expedition is scheduled to take place between 9th and 18th September and Donna has shared her appreciation for the support she has received ahead of the climb.
She adds:
“Training is in full swing with daily walks and weekend hill-hunting missions, including a recent climb up Snowdon to get a taste of what lies ahead!
“The encouragement and the support has been amazing and really appreciated, including a letter of encouragement from the local MP, which was a welcome morale boost as the countdown to departure continues.”
