Jodrell Bank’s recent acceptance of two prestigious awards was at the top of the agenda when David Rutley, local MP, met with Professor Teresa Anderson MBE, Director of the University of Manchester's Discovery Centre at Jodrell Bank Observatory.
Since its opening last year, the First Light Pavilion’s unique science heritage exhibition has gone from strength to strength, welcoming a variety of visitors through its doors to visit the immersive audio-video experience. The British Society for the History of Science has also witnessed the unique exhibition and has awarded the First Light Pavilion the ‘Exhibiting Excellence’ award.
This award celebrates the way the exhibition provides accessible science through a structure of short ‘chapters’, offering visitors a range of different ways to engage with the stories being told. The judges of the award were particularly impressed with the integration of the panels of the original surface of the Lovell Telescope into the exhibition.
Not only has the internal exhibition been recognised for its excellence, but the architecture of the building has also recently been presented with an award at the 2023 Civic Trust Awards. These awards champion projects that have demonstrated excellence in their respective fields and highlights that their work not only enriches the physical environment but also helps create a better sense of place and identity for our communities.
Jodrell Bank continues to provide a number of exciting and unique events and in July will be welcoming festival-goers to the 2023 bluedot festival for a weekend of music, science and cosmic culture.

Speaking after the meeting, David said, “I am very pleased to see that Jodrell Bank and the First Light Pavilion exhibition has been recognised for the high-quality design both inside and for its exterior. As we approach another bank holiday in May, I would urge anyone looking for a fun day to visit the exhibition and enjoy the great work Teresa and her team have done. Each year the Bluedot Festival is a triumph, merging science and music and I look forward to this year’s event!”
