The Cheshire East Health and Wellbeing Board is updating the joint local Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2023 to 2028 and wants views and comments from residents.
The strategy will guide the work of the council, partners and stakeholders to improve health and wellbeing across Cheshire East and will include clear objectives to support people to improve their health and wellbeing.
Bringing together the council and the NHS for closer integrated working, the strategy will also describe how the positive difference will be measured over the next five years.
Many residents in Cheshire East already have good levels of physical and mental health and wellbeing. However, there are still significant issues affecting the population, some of which have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and cost of living crisis.
Written on behalf of the Cheshire East Health and Wellbeing Board and the Cheshire East Health and Care Partnership, the three main aims of the strategy are to:
- Reduce health inequalities, narrowing the gap between those who are enjoying good health and wellbeing and those who are not
- Improve the physical and mental health and wellbeing of all of the resident population, and;
- Help people to have a good quality of life, to be healthy, independent and happy.
Councillor Sam Corcoran, leader of Cheshire East Council and chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “The health inequalities across Cheshire East are truly shocking, with a 12.7-year gap in life expectancy for men between Crewe Central and Sandbach Ettiley Heath & Wheelock.
“This strategy emphasises promoting good health, rather than simply treating ill health. We know how to promote good health through improved housing, decent jobs, healthy lifestyles with access to green spaces, exercise, good diet and smoking cessation.
“Updating this strategy will enable us take action to help improve the long-term health and wellbeing of Cheshire East residents.
“The aim of this engagement process is to give our residents a greater say about the health and wellbeing priorities in their local area and to help them take ownership of their wellbeing with support available when and where it’s needed.”
The board are now seeking views from residents and those who work in Cheshire East to give feedback on this strategy, before it is adopted in April 2023.
