New ‘pocket parks’ open in Crewe to boost community wellbeing

Cheshire East Council has officially opened two more ‘pocket parks’ in Crewe, marking another major milestone in the town’s ongoing regeneration.

Lime Tree Avenue was unveiled on 28th October, followed by the opening of Samuel Street on 4th November. Both events were attended by members of Crewe Town Board and local dignitaries, who celebrated the transformation of these vital community spaces.

The parks now feature new play areas, improved footpaths and street furniture. Lime Tree Avenue also boasts new outdoor gym equipment – encouraging residents to enjoy active, healthy lifestyles.

The two parks are part of a wider programme of eight pocket parks being delivered across Crewe, with £1.25m already invested in the six completed sites. The government’s Towns Fund has contributed £825,000 to date, with a total of £1.3m allocated for all eight parks.

Councillor Michael Gorman, chair of Cheshire East Council’s economy and growth committee, said:

“It’s great news to see another two pocket parks open. We are three-quarters of the way through completing the eight parks we set out to create and I’m sure that Lime Tree Avenue and Samuel Street will be well used. 

“The revitalisation of these parks has seen significant improvements providing more accessibility for residents in these important community spaces. Pocket parks are places where we have created more attractive and better-equipped areas for people to spend time, play and enjoy physical activity. 

“Access to green spaces also contributes to improved mental health – enabling the improvement of public health. They are hugely important to our local communities.”

Simon Yates, vice chair of Crewe Town Board, said:

“I felt privileged to be able to attend both these events on behalf of the board and I’m very keen to see how the final two parks at Valley Park and Westminster Street will be transformed for their local communities, as well when they are completed next summer. 

“Pocket parks are brilliant community projects to be involved in and I know that Crewe residents are very proud of them.”
