New Northwich Market expected to open in mid-September

The new Northwich Market is expected to open in mid-September at Barons Quay. The date will be confirmed in the coming weeks with works on the new market progressing and traders about to start their fit outs.

With the opening of the new Northwich Market at Barons Quay, trading at the existing market stalls in Weaver Square will come to an end on Saturday 29th August.

The Market Hall Café will continue to operate from its current premises, with customers still able to access the café as usual.

Askins and Colins Hair, which occupy shop units on the exterior of the former Market Hall in Weaver Square, will also remain unaffected and continue trading as normal.

The Council has been supporting the existing market traders. The Style Hut is opening in the new market whilst other traders have been offered spaces in Winsford Market or have sought alternative trading premises if they did not wish to transfer to the new Northwich Market. All traders were consulted on the plans for the new market and offered free business support to make an application to trade in the new market.

Opening the new market is part of the plan to deliver a new chapter for Northwich town centre, with ION Developments and Cheshire West and Chester Council working in partnership to create new sustainable neighbourhood and mixed-use development at Weaver Square, a key priority for the Northwich Development Framework.

The vision sets out proposals for sustainable town-centre living, with around 200 high-quality homes including affordable homes, comprising a mix of houses and apartments alongside improved public realm and flexible event spaces, as well as a proposed new bus hub for the town centre.

Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cheshire West and Chester Council Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation said:

"Many residents will have fond memories of the old market in Weaver Square, which first opened in the 1960s. Times and public expectations have changed since, and at a time when other councils are closing or withdrawing from markets, this Council recognises markets remain important to town centres.

"The brand new Northwich Market will offer a much-improved experience for visitors and traders, including a prominent location within Barons Quay, fully accessible social space, indoor and outdoor seating, free WiFi, public toilets and a greater variety of food, drink and goods traders.

"We are all looking forward to a new chapter for Northwich Market, and seeing it thrive again."
