A newly refurbished Discharge Lounge has opened at Macclesfield Hospital, designed to improve patient flow across the hospital by freeing up beds as quickly as possible each day.
Designed with patient comfort in mind, the new facility offers a welcoming environment for those preparing to go home and includes a large seating area and three private rooms for patients who need to remain in bed or require isolation due to infection.
The dedicated space, which opened in December 2025, was funded through a successful national NHS bid, which provided investment to improve the Trust’s urgent and emergency care (UEC) services.
It also offers upgraded washing facilities, including a modern shower room and a separate toilet, giving patients the opportunity to wash and feel comfortable before leaving.
Hannah Jensen, Patient Flow Matron for East Cheshire NHS Trust, said:
“This is the best space we’ve had for the lounge because it’s been purpose-built to meet patient needs.
“It provides a calm, welcoming space for patients to wait comfortably for their discharge first thing in the morning.
“It’s a big step forward in improving patient flow and enhancing the discharge experience.”
Colleagues in the lounge work closely with ward teams, pharmacy, and transport services to ensure a safe and efficient discharge process.
The lounge includes a registered nurse each day, enabling colleagues to administer medications and even provide the final dose of IV antibiotics prior to discharge, which helps free up beds on wards and supports better patient flow throughout the hospital.
Adding to the relaxing atmosphere, the lounge also features a stunning mural of Shining Tor looking towards Shutlingsloe, created by local photographer Anthony Dillon, bringing colour and a sense of connection to the local landscape.
