Two-way traffic to return to Winsford Station Bridge with weight restriction in place

Two-way traffic will be reinstated on Winsford Station Bridge following further engineering assessments, with a 7.5 tonne weight restriction and 20mph speed limit being introduced to protect the structure.

The restrictions will come into force as soon as signage has been manufactured and installed. It is anticipated this restriction will be in place early next week.

Detailed investigations into the condition of the bridge are continuing, but the latest assessment has confirmed that the bridge can safely reopen to two-way traffic provided the weight restriction is adhered to.

The 7.5 tonne weight restriction is essential to protect the bridge while engineers continue to assess its condition and develop longer-term plans.

A signed diversion route for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes will be in place via the A533 Bostock Road and A5018 Wharton Park Road.

Cheshire West and Chester Council is working closely with the Winsford Business Improvement District (BID), local businesses and local members to help ensure drivers are aware of the new arrangements and do not contravene the weight restriction.

The Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, Councillor Karen Shore, said:

"Following further engineering assessments, we are pleased to be able to reopen Winsford Station Bridge to two-way traffic, which will help improve access for residents, businesses and commuters.

"However, it is vital that the new 7.5 tonne weight restriction is observed. This restriction has been introduced on engineering advice and is necessary to protect the bridge while further investigations and assessments continue.

"We are working closely with the Winsford BID, local businesses and local members to raise awareness of the restriction and minimise the risk of heavy vehicles using the bridge.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by residents and businesses while this work continues, and we will provide further updates as more information becomes available."

The Council remains committed to securing funding to support the repairs needed and will continue to keep residents and businesses informed as the project progresses.
