One of Cheshire’s most haunted stately homes is hosting an exclusive showing of the 1984 blockbuster Ghostbusters, hopeful it will discourage their spooky residents misbehaviour whilst raising money for charity.
The NSPCC’s Midsummer Drive-In Movie Festival runs at Capesthorne Hall from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 June, and offers a unique chance to watch film classics on a one of the biggest mobile movie screens in the world.
The morning showings are aimed at children and families, with Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation on Saturday and Peter Rabbit on Sunday, while evening screenings will include Spider-Man: Far From Home on Friday, Ghostbusters on Saturday and Little Women on Sunday.
Ghost hunter Yvette Fielding and her Most Haunted television team have previously visited the stately home and filmed numerous paranormal presences, including a poltergeist that enjoyed throwing books off the shelves, and an assortment of disembodied limbs including a hand floating past a window and a head gliding across a corridor.
A spokesperson for Capesthorne said: “We are hopeful that Bill Murray and his team of ghostbusters will help improve our spooky resident’s misbehaviour! We are delighted to support this inaugural event that’s success could generate income to answer 7,500 Childline contacts.”
The three-day movie festival marks the NSPCC’s first national Childhood Day as well as the 37th anniversary of Ghostbusters first screening. The festival, organised by the NSPCC’s East Cheshire Special Events team, is sponsored by Lidl GB who are taking care of catering with deluxe hot dogs and other cinema favourites and proceeds will go to the NSPCC.
Tickets to each drive-in screening cost from £30 per car, with up to five people per vehicle, while VIP tickets are also available, guaranteeing a space in the front three rows – the best in the house – as well as two free deluxe hotdogs and a goody bag.
Comic and television presenter Jason Manford has also shared details of the event with his hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers, encouraging them to “go see a film in Cheshire this weekend and raise money for children!”
Janette Drew, NSPCC community fundraising manager, said: “We are hugely excited about the Midsummer Drive-In Movie event, and incredibly grateful to everyone at Lidl and Capesthorne Hall for their support.
“The last year has been a real challenge for the NSPCC, as so many of our important fundraising events have been postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic. Around 90% of funding for all our vital child protection work comes from public donations, so hosting such an amazing event in such a wonderful setting couldn’t be more welcome.”
