On Wednesday 20 January, Head Coach Gregor Townsend named a 35-man squad for the 2021 Six Nations Rugby Championship and that included the 20-year-old former Sandbach player Ewan Ashman.
Ewan made his Premiership debut for Sale Sharks last summer, in their 31 v 40 win at Welford Road, against Leicester Tigers, having come through the ranks at Bradwall Road. Ewan starting his rugby in the Club’s Under 8’s and represented Cheshire and Scotland at various age group levels. The hooker made his debut for the Sandbach 1st XV, three years ago and they helped his development, with working with the Sandbach then Head Coach Rob Webber, the former England International being the Sale Sharks first choice hooker.
Last season Ewan again excelled for Scotland, who he qualifies for through his father, when he was the top try scorer, in the Under 20’s Six Nations Tournament. Ewan joins a number of players from the Club over the past 20 who have gone on to become topflight performers. This being best illustrated that in the spring of 2012, Premiership side, Sale Sharks featured five ex-Sandbach players in a Premiership game against Wasps.
The Club wish him all the best, in what they hope will be a long and successful career.
