Tuesday 6th February marks Safer Internet Day, which aims to promote the safe, positive, and responsible use of the internet for children and young people.
Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day event sees hundreds of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year Safer Internet Day will be focusing on change online, this includes covering:
- Young people’s perspective on new and emerging technology
- Using the internet to make change for the better
- The changes young people want to see online
- The things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and act online and offline
This year, the Constabulary will be following the theme of inspiring change, with the campaign encouraging open conversations with young people and their carers regarding how to manage the pressures of influence and how to navigate the constantly changing digital landscape.
During the day, officers from across the force will be visiting schools and youth organisations to deliver talks and presentations on how young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers need to join together to help to create a safer internet for all.
Detective Chief Inspector Adam Alexander, of the force’s Digital Media Investigations Unit, said:
“Safer Internet Day is an excellent opportunity to emphasise the Constabulary’s continued promise of targeting those intent on abusing and exploiting our county’s young people online.
“Keeping children safe both on and offline is a priority for us as a force; we will continue to work alongside our partner organisations, youth groups and young people themselves in championing a better and more secure internet for all.”
Police and Crime Commissioner, John Dwyer, said:
“Safer Internet Day is increasingly important in today’s society. The changing nature of the digital landscape and social media demonstrate the power of the internet and its role in our day-to-day lives. The internet has altered the way people communicate and consume media on a daily basis.”
“Protecting vulnerable and at-risk people is a key priority for me. People of all ages can be at risk of having their vulnerabilities exploited online and I hope Safer Internet Day serves as a reminder to remain vigilant.”
