A growing community of kind and compassionate volunteers is helping more people across Cheshire East settle back home after a hospital stay, and you could be part of it.
The Home from Hospital Good Neighbour programme, led by Cheshire East Council, now has 38 dedicated volunteers already making a real difference across the borough.
With several established teams in place, new volunteers can choose to join an existing group of friendly neighbours or help expand support into new areas. Building on the council’s successful People Helping People service, the programme supports individuals discharged from Macclesfield and Crewe hospitals by providing practical help and a reassuring, friendly presence during their recovery at home.
Volunteers receive comprehensive training and ongoing support, helping them feel confident from day one. From picking up shopping and preparing simple meals to walking pets, or stopping by for a friendly chat, Good Neighbours play a vital role in easing the transition home.
Many volunteers say they get just as much out of the programme as the people they support. Several have gained valuable experience, developed new skills, and even boosted their career prospects through their involvement.
Tim, a current volunteer, said:
“I joined to help for a few hours a week, but I’ve gained so much confidence and new skills. Supporting someone after a hospital stay is incredibly rewarding, and you really do see the difference you make.”
Another volunteer, Amira, added: “I wanted experience working with people while I studied, and this programme has been perfect. It’s boosted my CV and helped me develop skills I can hopefully use in future roles.”
Councillor Jill Rhodes, chair of Cheshire East Council’s adults and health committee, said:
“Going home after a hospital stay can be daunting, especially for those who live alone or have limited mobility.
“Home from Hospital Good Neighbour volunteers provide much‑needed practical and emotional support, which can help to reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety, and improve recovery times.
“Volunteering is also a fantastic way to give back to your community and make a real difference in people's lives. Helping someone regain their independence after a hospital stay is incredibly rewarding.”
