Here's an uplifting story from the Christmas bulletin issued by the Cheshire Association of Local Councils...
When Hamish (not his real name) joined Brereton Parish Council eight months ago, he brought with him 15 years experience of negative behaviour and prejudice over his unique condition.
He had previously been a serving police officer when he was involved in a serious assault which left him with physical injuries and a diagnosis of PTSD.
Later he was also diagnosed with high functioning autism.
However, from day one Brereton Parish Council has proved to be exceptional. They have been supportive and devised ways to help Hamish communicate with confidence in meetings.
Hamish wanted to record the work that Brereton has done for him, and wrote to ChALC.
He said:
“This is the first time in in 15 years I have felt motivated and in a position where I am able to use the skills I have. There are two things that have done this.
First becoming a Councillor and secondly because of Brereton Parish Council both as a team and as individuals.
"I haven't come across a group or organisation that have given me an opportunity such as this or the support to develop and use skills I have been unable to use for so long.”
ChALC says:
“This was such a lovely email to read and so very unusual for someone to take the time and trouble to share such a positive story.
"Well done to both Hamish and Brereton PC.
“We hope that by sharing, others may be inspired to overcome their challenges and become councillors too."
