Reviewing improvements being made to the Macclesfield Canal was the focus of a recent meeting between local MP, David Rutley, the interim director for the Canal & River Trust, Jon Horsfall and Duncan Learmond, Secretary of the Macclesfield Canal Society, at Bosley Lock Flight.
During the meeting, David was pleased to hear about the key works which are being undertaken across the Macclesfield Canal, including erosion control structures, steps to improve water measurement, improvements to pathways and the locks to enrich the experiences for all that use the canal. This work is especially important in the face of additional pressures, including the impact of climate change, which makes our water ways more vulnerable.
Mr Learmond highlighted the important role that local volunteers are playing in maintaining and supporting our local canals. He highlighted how initiatives such as community adoption schemes are developing in parts of the country. This enables local businesses or community groups to adopt a mile or more for a year and to volunteer regularly to help maintain the section of the canal.
Discussions were also held on how the charity can raise much-needed funds, with the additional pressures caused by inflation. Mr Horsfall also discussed the Trust’s concerns about its future public funding arrangements. This is an issue that a number of local residents have raised with David and he has followed up on these concerns with Defra Minister, Rebecca Pow MP.
The Canal & River Trust is responsible for 2,000 miles of waterways and associated historic industrial infrastructure in England and Wales, including the well-known flight of twelve locks at Bosley. It maintains the navigability and safety of its waterways including reservoirs and embankments. The Macclesfield Canal is one of our great local heritage assets, which is used for walking, canal boating, canoeing, fishing and many other outdoor recreation activities.
Following the meeting, David said:
“No one could doubt the importance of Macclesfield Canal as a treasured heritage and local community asset, which is right on our doorstep. It is vital that we work to protect and conserve our canals and I am grateful to Duncan, Jon and the Trust’s dedicated staff and volunteers for all their work in helping to maintain our local waterways, so that they can continue to be enjoyed by all.”
