Showcasing their fantastic Easter bonnets and boaters in their parade was a highlight of Poynton Golden Memories’ celebration for Easter.
David Rutley, MP for Macclesfield had the honour of choosing the top three bonnets.
Poynton Golden Memories meet every fortnight, with the only criteria to participate being that a person living with Dementia / Alzheimer’s must be accompanied by their spouse, a relative or a Carer. As one of their sessions, fell right before the bank holiday weekend, the organisers decided to turn it into an Easter celebration. Before lunch, the 60 members who joined for the festivities took part in a variety of activities organised by Judy Hatton & Pauline Winfield along with the groups regular qualified fitness/entertainer, Julia Robertson. Aiming to get everyone moving, the group participated in ball and bean bag throwing into buckets and using a colourful parachute to get everyone onto their feet, accompanied by nostalgic music.
David was very impressed by the number of beautiful Easter bonnets which had been designed and created for the parade and he had a very difficult decision in choosing the top three bonnets. The MP was pleased to hear that Poynton Golden Memories had been supported by Morrisons, who kindly donated the three winning easter egg prizes, and also by Waitrose, who provided a chocolate bunny for every member and their guests.
At each session held by the community group, members are provided with lunch of soup, bread & home-made cake. After this, the group were able to take part in a new activity: a horse racing game, featuring handmade horses, crafted by Poynton’s local Men In Sheds group, and painted by volunteers.
Poynton Golden Memories continues to see an increase in people accessing their greatly appreciated sessions. Its Chair, Judy Hatton, highlighted the need for more volunteers to ensure the organisers can continue to provide excellent sessions every two weeks. Speaking after the visit, David said, “It was an honour to visit the Poynton Golden Memories Easter celebration and see its members have such an enjoyable time together. The work the group continues to do to support those living with dementia/Alzheimer’s and to actively engage their families is truly inspiring. I hope more local people will become involved to continue providing this much valued support.”
