Stockport siblings plan 50km walk in memory of Mum

On Sunday October 17th, siblings Simon, Sharon and Sinead Hickey, alongside other family members, will be raising vital funds for The Brain Tumour Charity.

The Brain Tumour Charity  is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting this devastating disease, by taking part in the The Twilight Walk, in memory of their mother Ann.

The 50km route – expected to take the group about fourteen hours to complete – will start and finish at Ann’s house, and has been carefully planned to take in some of Ann’s favourite places to walk,  including Etherow Country Park, Park, Whalley Bridge,  Bollington, and the Middlewood Way.

Simon, Sinead,  and Sharon, from Stockport, were inspired to sign up to The Twilight walk after their mum was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiform grade 4 in September 2018 and unfortunately lost her battle with the disease in October 2019.

Sharon said: “We didn't know anything at all about brain tumours a year ago and now 12 months later we've lost the most important person in our lives to one.

“Our Mum, Ann, loved walking, and we feel this is a fitting tribute to her. We've always gone on family walks as long as we can remember. She always had pet dogs growing up which is what got us into walking as a family, when we got our springer spaniel. From a young age it’s always something we've done together.

“She was a loving and caring person who had many friends in the local community.  Family was the most important thing to Mum so we are completing the massive 50km walk as a family.

“We will be walking all of Mums favourite paths. One of which Sinead, the youngest, got 'lost' along. It’s always been a funny story to tell in our household, mainly because she wasn't lost at all.

“We will also be going by the stream we used to go to every summer for picnics and walking past all the boats whose owners our Mum made life-long friends with”.

The siblings set out to raise £1000, and are delighted to have already hit that target, days before the walk takes place.

Sharon said: “We’re quite apprehensive about taking on this challenge, it’s a short time to cover a long way but we’ve raised so much for such an important cause so close to our hearts.  What will keep us going is knowing Mum would be cheering us on, on the sidelines.

“Less than 3% of research is spent on brain tumours which is such a shocking statistic, but hopefully any money raised is a step in the right direction for more research into brain tumours.”

This October, The Twilight Walk will unite The Brain Tumour Charity community up and down the country, as they take on a walking challenge wherever they are to raise money, raise awareness and celebrate loved ones.

COVID-19 has had a profound impact on everyone and The Charity has seen a huge impact to our fundraising. It has also forced many in their community to isolate, cut off from their families and loved ones. Brain tumours aren’t slowing down during the pandemic and with our communities continued support, neither are we

The Twilight Walk has been and continues to be, one of The Brain Tumour Charity’s most supported events and will unite the whole community virtually this October.

Geraldine Pipping, The Charity’s Director of Fundraising, said: “We are extremely grateful for all the efforts made by our fantastic fundraisers and wish them all the very best for this October’s walks.

“Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s and, unlike other cancers, survival rates have not improved over the last 40 years.

“We are leading the way in changing this and truly fighting brain tumours on all fronts through our work.

“We receive no government funding and rely 100% on voluntary donations, so it’s only through the efforts of people like Sharon and her family that we can change these shocking statistics in the future and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year.”

The Brain Tumour Charity is the UK’s largest dedicated brain tumour charity, committed to fighting brain tumours on all fronts.

They fund pioneering research to increase survival and improve treatment options as well as raising awareness of the symptoms and effects of brain tumours to bring about earlier diagnosis.

The Charity also provides support for everyone affected so that they can live as full a life as possible, with the best quality of life.
