Local blood testing services are facing significant challenges due to a high number of missed appointments, particularly at the Victoria Infirmary in Northwich.
The ‘Did Not Attend’ (DNA) rate has reached alarming levels, prompting healthcare leaders to urge the community to either keep their scheduled blood test appointments or cancel them by calling 01782 674242.
Recent figures indicate that the situation is critical, with a substantial percentage of appointments going unutilised, leading to unnecessary strain on NHS resources. In December 2024 there were 473 appointments where patients failed to attend, which accounts for approximately 39 hours in lost time. In November 2024, there were 474 missed appointments.
Each missed appointment not only wastes vital time but also hinders the ability to provide care to other patients in need.
Gemma Morgan-Lees, general manager of the Victoria Infirmary, emphasises that phlebotomy slots are in high demand:
“When appointments are missed, it results in a significant waste of NHS resources that could be better utilised for other patients. Additionally, we see patients arriving without their blood test request forms, which prevents us from taking necessary samples. And we are unable to print the request forms on behalf of the requestor.
“It is essential to understand that a blood test is more than just a routine procedure. It plays a crucial role in identifying potential health issues early, ensuring that you receive the appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Delays or missed tests can lead to the oversight of critical health signs, which can severely affect your care.”
She also highlights the importance of timely blood test results for effective health management:
“Without these results, your doctor may lack the necessary information to manage your health properly, potentially delaying important medications, treatments, or referrals.
“Every missed appointment translates to longer wait times for others who need their tests. If appointments are arranged by GP surgeries or other healthcare providers, it is still the patient’s responsibility to notify us at 01782 674242 if they cannot attend.
“Missed blood test appointments do not just impact the individual; they waste valuable NHS resources that could be directed towards assisting other patients. Each missed test contributes to an increasing backlog and adds pressure on NHS staff.
“We ask that you please attend your appointment or cancel if you cannot make it.”
