A cancer patient who only recently completed treatment is set to tackle a mammoth endurance event to raise funds for The Christie charity.
Christie patient Ruby Morel is due to take part in the Tough Mudder event at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire on Saturday 4 September only weeks after finishing her treatment.
Ruby, 23, who is studying for a PhD in chemistry, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December last year and although she is still recovering is set to tackle the challenging event for charity.
Tough Mudder sees teams and competitors tackle 10 miles of mud-soaked mayhem and features 25 gruelling obstacles. Ruby will be joined by friends Karl Bloor, Sam Walker and Jordan Holland and family members.
Ruby, who lives in Alsager said: “We have done the event before so it seemed a great target to focus on following my treatment.
“Despite the fact I haven't been feeling very strong and it is taking longer than expected to re-gain my fitness, I am determined to do the event and always have my team for support.
“I wanted to try and raise funds for The Christie as the care and treatment I received was amazing so it seems right to try and help them now.”
Liz Williams from The Christie charity said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Ruby and her friends have chosen to raise funds for the charity by taking part in the Tough Mudder event.
“To be taking part so soon after completing her treatment shows real commitment and courage and we are all right behind her. Ruby is a real inspiration and we hope she and her team enjoy the event.”
The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust providing enhanced services over and above what the NHS funds. This includes money for care and treatment, research, education and extra patient services. Gifts from the public make a huge difference to the care and treatment that The Christie is able to provide to patients and their families.
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust was the first specialist trust to be rated as ‘Outstanding’ twice (in 2016 and 2018) by the health regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It referred to The Christie as ‘a leader in cancer care’ and ‘a pioneer in developing innovative solutions to cancer care.’ The CQC praised the Trust’s staff which it said ‘go the extra mile to meet the needs of patients and their families’ and that they were ‘exceptionally kind and caring.’ In 2017, the CQC rated The Christie as the best specialist trust in the country, and one of the top three trusts overall in England.
