SCOOP AND SCALES POP UP SHOP SUCCESS STORY

Macclesfield MP, David Rutley, recently visited Scoop and Scales, at its latest Pop Up Refill Shop in Macclesfield’s Old Sunday School, Heritage Centre to give his support to the work of this active, environmental initiative.

At the event, Matt Todd, Joint-Chair of Scoop and Scales, explained to David how the Cooperative was established as a buyer’s club for ethically sourced products and to reduce waste. David was able to see the extensive range of products from pulses, grains, washing up liquid, chocolate to chewing gum that is available to members, and also to the public at pop up events.

Scoop and Scales is a volunteer run organisation, which has grown to have 165 members and has now organised five popular ‘Pop Up’ events for local residents. This is an impressive achievement for an organisation that only recently came to being following a Macctastic Eco Network meeting in June 2019 and had its first collection night in November of that year.

Scoop and Scales’ mission is to reduce waste and create a space where local people can buy ethically sourced products and reduce their impact on the environment. The organisers buy goods in bulk and members re-use containers, the result being a huge reduction in the amount of plastic waste created. The group also reinvest a portion of their profits back into local causes.

The group is opening a shop at the Old Sunday School from October, and it is hoped that this will allow them to stock a wider range of products, be open on a regular basis and become a hub of environmental change in Macclesfield. Following the meeting David said “I was very impressed to see Scoop and Scales’ Pop Up shop and pleased to learn more about the group’s important mission to provide ethically sourced products to local people in an environmentally friendly way. They have seen great results since starting up just over a year ago and I wish the Scoop and Scales team every success with their plans to open a shop in the Old Sunday School Building – a fitting location in one of our iconic community heritage assets.”
