As part of Vernon Primary School’s participation in UK Parliament Week, Macclesfield MP, David Rutley, visited the school to speak with students about Parliament, the role of an MP and to take their questions on a variety of topics.
David joined pupils, from Key Stage 2, in a special assembly, where they asked him about his role as the local Member of Parliament. He explained how Parliament works, as well as how MP’s represent residents on issues both locally and in the House of Commons.
Student councillors from each of the year groups also asked David a range of thoughtful and well-prepared questions, including the importance of the environment, the ongoing war in Ukraine and tackling pollution.
David was also impressed to hear about a petition one of the students had started in school to save Poynton Leisure Centre. With over 300 signatures from staff and pupils, David also shared his concerns and objection to proposals that could lead to to closure of the leisure centre and agreed to raise the petition with Cheshire East Council to help highlight the strength of local concern.
UK Parliament Week is an important initiative which David has strongly supported over many years. Over 1 million people take part in thousands of activities each year, and further information on how to take part next year can be found using the following link:

Speaking after the visit, David said:
“I am pleased to see Vernon Primary School once more celebrating Parliament Week. It is an important part of students’ education, to learn about Parliament and our democratic values and processes. I hope next year will see even more schools take part in this well-established initiative.”
