Cheshire East Council recognises the transport and economic opportunities a new Liverpool-Manchester railway could deliver to Crewe, Cheshire East, and the region as a whole.
Councillor Nick Mannion, leader of Cheshire East Council, said:
“As set out in the prospectus for this new rail link, the next steps are to identify the specific scheme solutions and investment programme.
“We are fully committed to working with partners on the board to ensure that what is developed is right for Cheshire East, right for the North as a whole, and that Crewe is absolutely at the heart of those plans.
“Crewe’s 360-degree connectivity and strategic position makes it fundamental to delivering on the region’s transport ambitions and to opening up economic opportunities.
“We are supportive of proposals that ensure any new services connect and stop in Crewe, and that ensure the station receives the type of investment that can match up to its credentials as one of the most important interchanges on the UK rail network.”
Councillor Michael Gorman, deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, said:
“Improved connectivity and capacity on our rail network can deliver transformational economic and social benefits, including new jobs, homes and regeneration.
“Crewe is integral to these plans if we are to realise the full potential of these benefits and have a transformed and integrated transport network.
“It is critical for Cheshire East that we see investment made at Crewe station and that services do not just pass through the town but connect and stop there.
“We look forward to working with partners collaboratively to ensure that we can maximise the many opportunities that a new Liverpool-Manchester railway could bring and deliver our collective ambition of a prosperous north.”
