A local mother is lacing up her running shoes this month to conquer a 100km challenge, raising vital funds for the Special Care Baby Unit at Macclesfield District General Hospital.
Jenny Rexha, a mother of two boys who were both born prematurely, was inspired to launch the initiative after her youngest son, Albi, was born at St Mary's Hospital in Manchester in October 2025 and required specialist care, resulting in a transfer to the Macclesfield SCBU where he spent nearly two weeks.
Before premature or vulnerable babies are discharged, parents are invited to stay overnight at the unit to build confidence and prepare for the transition home.
Recognising a crucial need during her own stay, Jenny, who lives in Congleton, is dedicating her ‘100k in May’ challenge to fund a brand-new, comfortable sofa bed for the parents' room on the unit.
Jenny said:
"Having a baby in neonatal care is a terrifying experience, but the team at Macclesfield SCBU were absolutely incredible.
“They made me feel so supported and cared for that it felt like I’d known them for years, nothing was ever too much trouble, and I knew I wanted to give something back.
"During our stay, I noticed parents mentioning on the feedback board that a new sofa bed was badly needed. Getting this new bed will mean the world to both the staff and the future families staying on the unit.
“It would be amazing if you can spare a few pounds to help the team, thank you for your support!"
Rachel Bellingham, SCBU manager, added:
"We are incredibly grateful to Jenny for taking on this amazing challenge for our unit. The transition from hospital to home is a massive milestone for parents of premature babies, and staying overnight on the unit plays a huge part in building that independence.
“Having a comfortable, high-quality sofa bed will make a world of difference to families during those vital final nights. We are all cheering Jenny on this May!"
So far, Jenny has already raised over £900 and hopes to hit her £1000 target before the month ends.
