For the first time in more than 40 years, traditional open pan salt making is set to return to the Lion Salt Works in Marston this September.
The Lion Salt Works Trust, which worked alongside Cheshire West and Chester Council to safeguard the historic site and transform it into an award-winning museum, is opening a new demonstration space dedicated to preserving and showcasing the traditional craft of salt making.
With support from Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Trust has refurbished the former smithy at the Salt Works. The building will now serve as a dedicated space for open pan salt making demonstrations, allowing visitors to experience a key part of Cheshire's industrial heritage first hand.
The Trust plans to run regular demonstrations for visitors, enthusiasts and community groups, helping to ensure that the skills and traditions associated with open pan salt making are passed on to future generations. An official launch of the refurbished smithy and handover of the building to the Lion Salt Works Trust will take place on Sunday, 20 September.
Speaking ahead of the launch, George Westlake, Chair of the Lion Salt Works Trust, said:
"We are delighted to be bringing salt making back to the Lion Salt Works after more than 40 years. This marks an important milestone in preserving a unique part of Cheshire's industrial heritage.
"The Trust is grateful for the support we have received from Cheshire West and Chester Council in refurbishing the smithy, and to The Headley Trust for its generous funding, which has enabled us to purchase the specialist equipment needed for these demonstrations.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for visitors to see how salt was traditionally produced and to learn more about the rich history of the Cheshire salt industry. We look forward to welcoming everyone who shares an interest in this remarkable craft."
Welcoming the opening of the refurbished smithy, Councillor Lisa Denson, Cheshire West and Chester Council's Cabinet Member for A Fairer Future, said:
"I am delighted that the Lion Salt Works Trust is moving into its new home in the smithy. The return of open pan salt making is an exciting development for the museum and for Cheshire's heritage.
"These demonstrations will give visitors a unique opportunity to see how salt was once produced on this historic site and help keep an important traditional skill alive for future generations."
