A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a pensioner in Northwich.
At 3.15pm on Tuesday 8 October police and paramedics were called to Peckforton Way in Castle after concerns were raised for the safety of the occupant.
Police and paramedics attended the scene and entered the address, where the body of John Hammerton, 72, was found inside. His next of kin have been informed.
Officers launched a murder investigation and, as part of their enquiries, they have today (Thursday 10 October) arrested a 55-year-old man from Northwich on suspicion of murder. He is currently in custody being questioned by officers.
Detective Inspector Kate Tomlinson, of Cheshire Constabulary’s Major Investigation Team, said: “A team of detectives are working hard to establish the exact circumstances of what has happened but, at this stage, it appears to be an isolated incident.
“As part of our investigation we are keen to piece together John’s final movements before his death. We know that he returned to the UK on 17 September, following a recent holiday, and we are trying to establish his movements since he returned home.
“We are also keen to hear from anyone who has seen or heard anything unusual or suspicious in the Castle area – particularly around John’s home on Peckforton Way.
“There are quite a few footpaths near to his home and it is also close to a number of shops and takeaways on Chester Road so people regularly walk through this area.
“I would urge anyone who has any information, no matter how small, which could assist officers with their enquiries, to get in touch.”
Inspector Andy Smith, Neighbourhood Inspector for Northwich Local Policing Unit, said: “Understandably, the local community will be concerned about what has happened but I would like to reassure those who live in Northwich that incidents of this nature are rare.
“Officers will remain in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance, and anyone will any concerns is urged to speak to one of my team.”
