Over one hundred Beech Hall School pupils, parents, grandparents and friends recently took to the water for their annual 24-hour Swimfest challenge, demonstrating phenomenal grit and determination to raise an impressive £3,000 for Mencap.
Showing true community spirit, swimmers aged from just 3 to 16 joined forces with older supporters, to cover a mighty 228 miles, a distance equivalent to crossing the English Channel six times over. The gruelling round-the-clock marathon was fully supported by dedicated parents and volunteers who kept morale high with a vibrant festival atmosphere, complete with high-energy music from a live DJ, a sweet treats stall, and a steady stream of nutritious food, including a highly popular fresh paella.
This latest triumph also served as critical training for the school's upcoming open-water season, as they prepare to send a brand-new group of hopefuls to face the English Channel. A remarkable 17 Beech Hall swimmers have already qualified for the challenge, including an ambitious team of six aiming to set a monumental world record as the first group of children to ever swim to France and back.
This daring feat builds upon a proud history of endurance swimming at the school; over the past six years, 25 pupils have completed a Channel relay, exceeding their goal of raising £150,000 for Mencap, and setting a new fundraising target of an additional £25,000 for 2026. It also follows their historic October 2024 achievement, where Beech Hall pupils became the first children to ever conquer the hefty 58.5km '20 Bridges' swim around Manhattan Island in a swift 7 hours and 22 minutes.
Reflecting on the school’s historic connection to the cause, James Allen, Headmaster of Beech Hall School, commented:
"This year's Swimfest was a magnificent showcase of the family spirit and raw determination that defines Beech Hall School. Our pupils pushed themselves to the absolute limit, and seeing everyone from our three-year-olds to our senior swimmers unite for Mencap was truly inspiring. This event is not just about fundraising; it is a vital part of building the stamina and mental toughness required for our upcoming Channel crossing. We are immensely proud of our legacy as the world's most successful junior Channel relay team, and as this new generation of swimmers prepares to chase a historic double-crossing world record, the enduring support of our community remains our greatest strength."
