As the World Cup continues, Cheshire East Council is calling on residents to remain vigilant to the increased risks of domestic abuse linked to major football tournaments and to support those who may be affected.
While many people enjoy coming together to watch and celebrate the matches, national research shows that incidents of domestic abuse can rise during these periods. Research shows that reported incidents of domestic abuse can rise significantly during international football tournaments. Cases increase by around 26% when England win or draw, and by 38% when England lose, with reports also rising by 11% the following day, regardless of the result.
These figures highlight the additional pressure and risk that some individuals may face behind closed doors during high-profile sporting events. It is important to recognise that domestic abuse is never caused by football, alcohol, or the outcome of a match. Responsibility lies solely with the perpetrator.
Cheshire East Council is urging communities to play their part by looking out for friends, neighbours, and family members who may be at risk, and by raising awareness of the support services available.
Councillor Laura Crane, cabinet member for children’s services at Cheshire East Council said:
“Major sporting events like the World Cup should be an opportunity for people to come together and enjoy themselves safely. However, we know that for some individuals, this period can bring increased fear and risk. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic abuse in Cheshire East, support is available. You are not alone.
"For local support, contact the Cheshire East Domestic Abuse Family Safety Unit or speak to the police if you are in immediate danger by calling 999. If you cannot speak, use the Silent Solution by dialling 999 and pressing 55 when prompted.
"Together, let’s enjoy the football safely and look out for those who may need support."
Chief Superintendent Saf Ali, Head of Local Policing at Cheshire Police, said:
“Tackling domestic abuse is a priority for Cheshire Police. Sadly, we know from previous tournaments that we are likely to see an increase in domestic abuse around certain fixtures and this can be exacerbated by the addition of alcohol and gambling.
“We are committed to prioritising domestic abuse and robustly targeting offenders whilst safeguarding victims and protecting children. We want the message to be clear; we will use everything at our disposal to support victims and apprehend perpetrators. Domestic abuse is a crime and, while emotions do tend to run high, it is not an excuse to abuse partners.
“We urge anyone suffering from domestic abuse or concerned for someone who might be a victim to contact us using 101, the online reporting tool or 999 in an emergency.”
Domestic abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and coercive or controlling behaviour. Anyone can be affected, regardless of age, gender, or background.
Residents are reminded that support is available locally through the Cheshire East Domestic Abuse Family Safety Unit, which can be contacted on:
